Sir (Edwin) Alliott Verdon-Roe (1877-1958) aircraft designer and manufacturer. From 1907 (just four years after the Wright brothers first flight) he pioneered his experimental flying machines at Brooklands. He made a few successful short flights, the first time a British-designed, British-built aeroplane had left the ground under its own power, piloted by the designer and constructor.
