Ary Scheffer (1795-1858) French painter of Dutch extraction. Scheffer often painted romantic literary scenes, notably from the works of Byron and Goethe. He was also an accomplished portrait painter, and painted Chopin and Liszt. Scheffer went to Claremont in 1857 to paint Queen Marie-Amélie Thérèse. He also visited the Duff Gordons at Belvedere House, and on a river boating trip with Millais and Doyle.
