Charles I (1600-1649) King of England, Scotland and Ireland.
Oatlands Palace was very much the Queen's residence during Charles I's reign. Henrietta Maria spend long periods of time there, making fashionable improvements inside and out. Charles would often visit, playing billiards and enjoying the magnificent gardens.
Charles' last visit to Oatlands was in 1647, when he was in the hands of Cromwell's army. Apparently the site of Oatlands somewhat calmed the agitated monarch.
After his execution in 1649 the palace was demolished. Charles' great art collection at Oatlands was dispersed, the park deforested, and the palace destroyed brick by brick.
