Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596), privateer, navigator, admiral. Drake was a vice admiral (under Lord Howard) of the English fleet, which defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588. As the English fleet chased the Armada up the English Channel, Drake captured the Spanish galleon 'Nuestra Señora del Rosario' of Admiral Pedro de Valdés along with its crew, and its cargo of funds to pay the Spanish Army in the Netherlands.
