Frederick James [Fred] Archer, (1857-1886) jockey, who become one of the first national sporting stars. His record of two hundred and forty six winners in the 1885 season remained intact until 1933. In 1874 he became champion jockey, a title he retained for thirteen consecutive seasons. During his brief career he rode two thousand, seven hundred and forty eight winners (from 8084 mounts), including five Derbys and sixteen other classics. He won the inaugural race at Sandown on Thursday 22nd April 1875.
