George Bridges Rodney
Admiral George Bridges Rodney, first Baron Rodney (bap. 1718-1792) naval officer and politician, was born in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. During the Seven Years War (1756-1763), naval forces under his command took a number of important French strongholds in the West Indies, notably Martinique. In 1780 Rodney defeated a Spanish fleet off Cape St Vincent, Portugal. His fleet then sailed to the West Indies, and in April 1782, near Dominica, he decisively defeated the French Fleet under Admiral Francois de Grasse; capturing seven ships and taking de Grasse prisoner. His victory ended French ambitions in the West Indies.
