Henry Holland (1745-1806) architect. Claremont House, built for Robert Clive in 1771-4, was the first partnership between Holland and Brown. A very large Palladian house with a giant Corinthian portico, spartan interiors with minimal classical trim. A deliberate rejection of the elaborate ornament associated with the Adam brothers. Whilst working on Claremont, Holland married Brown's elder daughter, Bridget.
