Henry Sweet, (1845-1912), phonetician and comparative philologist. On 30th August 1887, in Long Ditton, Sweet married Mary Aletheia Birch (1852-1935), a daughter of Samuel Birch (1813-1885), the Egyptologist at the British Museum. Sweet's major achievements were in phonetics and Old English studies. George Bernard Shaw based the character of Henry Higgins in Pygmalion, partly on that of Sweet.
