Admiral Sir John Balchin [commonly spelt Balchin, but the admiral and his contemporary correspondents wrote Balchen] (1669 - 1744). He joined the navy at 15 and spent most of the 1690s in the West Indies. Considered one of the finest seamen of his age, Balchin served in the War with Spain of 1739. He died at the age of 75 after 58 years of naval service on HMS Victory, which had over 1100 men aboard. The 100-guns ship was last seen on 4th October 1744. He lived at The Cedar House in Cobham.
