John Evelyn (1620-1706), diarist and writer. His best-known work is the 'Diary', which gives first hand reports of the many places he visited in Britain, and on the continent. Although, when Evelyn later edited his notes into his famous 'Diary' he augmented his experiences with references from guidebooks and other sources. Evelyn records visiting Portmore Park on 23rd August 1678, and seeing numerous priest-holes for holding illegal mass.
