Lady Penelope Ligonier (1749- died?) eldest daughter of George Pitt, first Baron Rivers, politician and diplomatist. After wounding but not killing Alfieri, Edward promptly divorced Penelope. Alfieri refused to marry her to save her from ruin claiming she had been sleeping with a stable boy for quite a while. Alfieri and Penelope fled to France until the scandal died down, but she returned to England and to social ostracism a few months later. She remarried a Captain Smith thirteen years later.
