Richard Drake (1535-1603), Equerry of the Stable to Elizabeth I. He was cousin of the admiral and navigator Sir Francis Drake. He served as factor to his cousin, and was given charge of the important prisoners the Spanish Armada captured off Plymouth in 1588, which included the Spanish vice-admiral, Don Pedro de Valdéz, whom he held at his manor in Esher, whilst a ransom was collected. When the sizeable ransom was finally paid his cousin and heirs disputed it. There is a memorial statue to him in Christ Church in Esher.
