Richard Arthur Warren Hughes
Richard Arthur Warren Hughes, (1900-1976), novelist and playwright. Hughes was born at Beeching in St Marys Road, Oatlands. Having written poetry, plays and short stories, Hughes's first novel, 'A High Wind in Jamaica' (published in the USA as The Innocent Voyage) was published in 1929. It immediately became a huge bestseller. It was made into a film in 1965. Hughes went to live in Morocco to escape the fame it brought him, where he was reputedly the first Christian to own property in the Kasbah of old Tangier since the late 1600s. His writing about Morocco, 'In the Lap of Atlas', was published in 1979.
